Policy For Hiring Those With Felony Convictions

We received the following response after a phone conversation with a Buffalo Wild Wings representative regarding their hiring policies for those with felony convictions:

“We accept and review all applicants that come by

“A felony would not automatically disqualify a candidate”

“Each candidate is assessed on a case-by-case basis”

“There are three interview steps that need to be completed before anyone is hired”

Have They Hired Former Felons?

Buffalo Wild Winds did not confirm or deny that they have hired felons in the past.

They do appear very open to hiring those with felony convictions and through the course of our conversation I cam away with the impression that they have hired employees with felony convictions in the past. They also appeared willing to overlook certain felonies in the future for qualified candidates.

Specific Program For Hiring Former Felons

They do not have a specific program for the hiring of those with felony convictions.

Who Makes Hiring Decisions

Hiring decisions are made by the hiring managers with input from the corporate Human Resources team.

I recently applied for a hostess position at Buffalo Wild Wings. I made it through all three interviews. None of the managers who interviewed me asked about any criminal background. I got accepted and start Monday. I am nervous that they may ask me when im there filling out paper work. (They said it was tax stuff, I hope they don’t throw a “Background Check Release Form” in there somewhere). For those of you who are curious, I am convicted of Misdemeanor Trespass and Felony Grand Theft (Stole golf flags and a water cooler off a golf coarse with friends while drinking at age 18). Now 25 so its been 7 years. No other charges on my record. Not even traffic violations.

I will write back if anything comes up or if they never ask.

    Fingers crossed!

It’s Megan again, I just wanted to give a heads up. I started my first day of training yesterday. After my ‘shift’ the Manager called me back in to finish my employee payroll and tax information. In the process, one of the questions was ‘Have you ever been convicted of a felony?’ I answered honestly. He asked what I did. I told him.

He seemed to hesitate slightly to fill in the rest of my information. Almost like he knew it would cause problems down the road. I asked him if this was something I was going to get let go for. He assertively stated ‘No. Don’t worry about it.’

Given the fact that the store I applied to is a corporate location, gives me little hope that what he said was true. Maybe this would be different at a franchise location. Better chances of an owner who would understand just because people make bad decisions, doesn’t always mean they’re a bad person.

I’ll update when I hear something.

Hey, it’s me again. So I’ve been with this company (Buffalo Wild Wings) for a total of 19 days now. I was beginning to get worried when all the new employees (hired at the same time as me) received their ‘Employee Cards’ and I hadn’t. I figured, well, they don’t plan on keeping me so they probably never ordered one.

Well, I’m happy to say that I finally received mine (common last name, so there was a delay). Also, I have been overhearing some interesting conversations among the other employees. A server was mentioning how she has 8 months left on probation (she fought another girl), as well as a female cook who is currently on house arrest (unsure of conviction, heard beeper going off and she mentioned she needed to get to a phone to call the person about it).

So, it appears as if they do hire people (who hold themselves well and who actually are looking to better their lives) who have made mistakes in the past. I (as stated above) have a felony theft charge, I am assuming the server has an assault charge (again, unsure of the actual conviction, just on what I overheard) and I am unsure of the charges on the women under house arrest, but I feel it’s safe to say it wasn’t petty.

BE HONEST WITH THEM! So far, no one has judged me. I do believe they WILL listen to your story (which is more that what most companies can say). As my (corporate) manager put it “I’m more interested in the person you are now, not when you were 17, Hold yourself to a high standard from now on and we’ll all be good, got it?”

Overall- it’s a very fast paced environment. You need to be on your A-game. If you like sports (and even if you don’t, but are willing to appear enthusiastic about them), I would say give it a shot. They pay better than my previous fast food job, and the tips are pretty decent. I would recommend them if you are looking for a job. They most likely won’t give you full time, but any income is better than no income.

Check GlassDoor for interview tips for the company. It was a godsend!

Good luck, I will only update from this point on if something related to my conviction causes an issue.
