What are the chances of Cintas hiring a felon?

Is Cintas on the Ban the Box list?

Yes, Cintas is on the list! The list comes from Ban the Box legislation that removes the box from the application asking if you’ve ever been convicted of a felony. This means you won’t need to broadcast your record on day one. However, your record will still show up in a background check (see below).

Cintas has signed the Fair Chance Business Pledge as well, confirming they will abide by the Ban the Box legislation and really try to offer work opportunities for people with a record. This makes it easier to get a job at Cintas with a felony.

This information is encouraging. Relaunch Pad likes to bring companies like this to your attention so you can apply to supportive workplaces. More importantly, we want to show you there are companies out there that are more than willing to hire former felons.

Does Cintas have special programs for hiring felons?

They don’t appear to have any special programs for hiring felons. However, we know they directly support hiring felons themselves.

What are some entry-level jobs?

Cintas has a variety of positions available at all times. Many of these entry-level jobs are physical with repetitive motions and housekeeping duties, so be prepared.

  • Garment Hanger/Inspector

This job involves putting customer uniforms on hangers before being pressed in a steam tunnel. Visually inspecting all uniforms and repairing damage is part of the job. Accuracy is critical for proper inventory control.

  • Garment Sorter

As a Garment Sorter, you’re responsible for sorting through uniforms and organizing them according to their I.D. number. This is crucial to make sure customers receive the right garments back. An ability to work efficiently and accurately will serve you well.

  • Stockroom Utility Operator

In this role, you’ll have general duties in the stockroom, including covering breaks, vacations and absences for all positions. This will also give you a good idea of how the stockroom functions. The position requires accuracy, a good level of productivity and a focus on inventory control.

Here are a few other positions that require a high school diploma or equivalent and a license to drive a vehicle of more than 10,000 lbs.

  • Assistant Service Sales Representative

Here, you’ll work independently driving a delivery truck. You’ll supply customers with products like uniforms, cleaning chemicals, shop towels and other rental items.

It’s important to build good relationships with your customers. Therefore, be professional, friendly and give service that goes above and beyond.

  • Deep Clean Technician

This job involves providing customers with cleaning and sanitizing services. You’ll also work with a Floor Cleaning Specialist. Your group of regular customers will receive cleaning services for kitchens, restrooms, carpets and other areas. You need to have some customer service experience.

The job is physical, with some heavy lifting. It includes sanitizing and maintaining equipment, as well as the van interior.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

Let’s talk about how to get you hired. You’ll need to apply online at Cintas. Here are some tips before you apply:

  • Include any unpaid or volunteer work on your resume. On their website, they explain this shows a strong work ethic. So, make sure to also mention anything you’ve done in prison. You’d be surprised the skills you’ve picked up or practiced while doing work in prison. Find a way to frame these roles and skills positively and tailor them to the position you’re applying for.
  • Dress professionally. If your clothes are wrinkly, stained or damaged, you are less likely to be taken seriously. There are many non-profit companies that will supply clothes for interviews, so look one of those up before you go.
  • Get a referral! Cintas  is a huge company. If you know anyone who works here, have him or her give you a referral. This can be in person, over the phone or in writing.
  • Speak politely and make sure you’re not using any “prison talk.” This might be a no-brainer, but a lot of us pick up bad habits we don’t notice.

One further note: The interview and screening process sometimes allows you to try out the position (i.e., a ride along in a delivery truck). This is a great way to figure out if this is a good fit for you. It also lets you show your skills and work ethic.

Does Cintas do background checks?

Yes, Cintas does background checks. Depending on the position, additional checks may be required, such as a Criminal Background Check, Motor Vehicle Report or Credit Check. Knowing this, you can prepare yourself and make sure you’re clear before you apply.

Here’s what you need to know about background checks:

Some states don’t even consider information more than seven years old. This means that if your offense was six years ago, you’ll want until next year to apply. This is also great news for former felons living in these states! If your felony conviction was seven years ago, these states won’t even look at them in the check:

  • California
  • Colorado*
  • Kansas*
  • Maryland*
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire*
  • New York *
  • Texas *
  • Washington*

(* sometimes certain pay or salary bracket positions require one.)

Even better, there are states that don’t consider court cases were you were found not guilty. Eight states are currently on this list:

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York

However, there are still some states that will look at your whole record. This includes your not guilty verdicts. Be aware, if you live in one of these states, that they will see everything:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • DC
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

What felonies Cintas will not hire

While they didn’t say certain charges would stop you from being hired completely, they did suggest a strong barrier for driving-related offenses. Are they flat-out nos, though? Read below.

What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?

If you’re applying for a job where you’ll need to drive, Cintas will want to know if you have a history of driving offenses. This includes any DWI convictions or license restrictions.

As explained by Will Thomson in Background Checks 101: The Driving Records issue, “These kinds of jobs require specific licenses and often need special insurance coverage. If your truck driver is on the road and harms another individual, there are huge liability issues.”

Other potential issues include security restrictions and state restrictions. Therefore, make sure you check what impact your record will have before applying.

Does Cintas hire sex offenders?

We’re not sure if the company hires people with sex offenses on their records, unfortunately. We didn’t see anything online and the company didn’t tell us.

Does Cintas drug test?

Yes, Cintas will ask you to have a drug test. You will complete this as part of the hiring process. Therefore, make sure you are clean and ready to get started before you apply. You can even tie this into your recovery program as a future goal.

They also have zero-tolerance for drinking and driving. While it’s obvious you shouldn’t drink and drive, be mindful that this applies when you’re on call or looking to pick up a shift.
