Does ADT hire felons?

Official company policy for hiring felons

As always, we went directly to the source to find out what sort of attitude they take towards hiring felons.

To this point, we have not heard back from anyone at ADT. However, we intend to keep following up with them in the hopes of updating our information.

That said, we have done a bit of independent research to find out what sort of approach ADT takes to hiring.

While we found some mixed results, it looks like they have some degree of openness to hiring former felons.

Has ADT hired felons in the past?

We also went online to find out if ADT has hired former felons in the past. Unfortunately, we were not able to find any direct reports from former felons claiming to have worked at ADT in the past. It doesn’t mean that they won’t do it, of course. It just means that we haven’t heard from the right people yet.

Does ADT hire people with misdemeanors?

Most companies that will hire people with felonies are also going to be willing to hire people with misdemeanors. That being the case, we can say a misdemeanor won’t likely keep you from getting hired.

Will ADT hire you with pending charges?

Maybe, but it’s more likely the company will want to wait until your charges are dismissed to hire you for most positions.

What are the chances of ADT hiring a felon?

Is ADT on the Ban the Box list?

Unfortunately, when some hiring managers see that an applicant has a criminal record, they immediately stop considering them for the new job. Ban the Box is a movement that removes questions about a candidate’s criminal history from job applications. They help candidates stand out on the basis of their skills rather than their past.

Then there is the Fair Chance Business Pledge. This is a movement in which businesses make a promise not to discriminate in their hiring process.

ADT is not involved in either movement. The good news is that this isn’t as big of a concern as it might sound. Both programs have relatively modest participation at this point and there are many businesses that hire former felons that aren’t involved with either.

Does ADT have special programs for hiring felons?

Some companies also have special programs that are designed to help former felons find work. For example, certain businesses might have a process that streamlines hiring for people on parole.

If you have a record, these opportunities are an excellent way to get hired. Unfortunately, though, ADT does not have any of these programs.

What are the odds someone with a felony will get hired?

Low likelihood of hiring felons

Let’s go over the facts. We haven’t heard from the company, we haven’t actually been able to talk to any that worked there, and they don’t participate in Ban the Box. They also don’t have any special programs for hiring former felons.

Based on everything that we found, it seems that your chances of getting hired are fairly low. However, it is possible that we will be able to change this verdict once we hear back from the company.

How to get hired at ADT with a felony

What are some entry-level jobs?

While it may or may not be possible to get a job at ADT with a felony, it may still be of interest to examine a few potential career opportunities. ADT has three main categories of employment at the entry-level: Installation, sales and customer service.

Sales positions will probably involve a more traditional nine-to-five weekday schedule, whereas call center jobs may have around-the-clock hours.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

Even though we rated your odds of getting hired as low, it’s definitely still possible to improve your chances to get a job at ADT with a felony.

As with any employment opportunity, it all starts with a good application. Resume writing tends to be challenging, there are steps you can take to make sure you submit a good application.

For example, a career center is an excellent resource for finding employment. They can look at your resume and help you improve it. If you don’t have access to that type of resource, you should at least allow a friend or family member to check for errors.

The types of skills you decide to highlight on your resume may depend partly on which category of employment you are looking into. For example, people that want a job in installation will probably want to demonstrate their technical skills. If you’ve worked as a handyperson or in any other job that requires skill with tools, those are the types of jobs you will want to promote.

However, if you’re applying for a position in sales or the call center, you will probably want to highlight your customer service skills. This could include anything from working as a clerk to positions in the foodservice industry.

While the interview can be very intimidating, there are ways you can make it go smoother. For one thing, you’ll want to dress as professionally as you can manage.

There are some charities that donate or loan out professional attire to people in need.

You will also want to make sure you cover your tattoos and remove any unconventional piercings. As a security company, ADT does what it can to promote a clean, professional image. Presenting yourself in a way that compliments that image will go a long way towards helping you to get hired.

Last but not least, just be yourself! The interview will go a lot smoother if you feel comfortable!

Does ADT do background checks?

It looks like ADT will perform background checks on their applicants.

However, where you live can have a big impact on what they find.

For example, in some states, ADT will only learn about offenses that occurred in the last seven years. If you live in one of these locations, the background check will be fairly limited:

  • California
  • Colorado*
  • Kansas*
  • Maryland*
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire*
  • New York*
  • Texas*
  • Washington*

*States with an asterisk may feature enhanced background checks depending on the pay bracket.

There are also some states that won’t feature any information about crimes you were found not guilty of. This means ADT won’t learn anything about your acquittals in these states:

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana (limited check)
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York

Finally, there are many states that include your entire background, including offenses you were found not guilty of. If you live in any of these places, ADT will learn everything:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • DC
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Indiana (extensive check)
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

Company ratings

We also went on glassdoor.com to find out what it is like to work at ADT. They have an average rating of 2.8 out of 5 stars based on over 2,500 reviews.

Their highest rating was 2.9 for compensation and benefits. Their lowest score was 2.3 for senior management.

What felonies ADT will not hire

You can imagine they’ll have some convictions they can’t overcome when looking at your application. ADT didn’t tell us what they are, so we made our best guesses in the next section.

What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?

Because ADT has many customer service positions, they may be reluctant to hire people with violent or sexual offenses. Similarly, if you’re applying for an installation job, it may hurt your chances if you have a history of substance abuse.

Finally, it is a security company. That means they probably won’t want candidates with a history of theft or burglary.

Does ADT hire sex offenders?

Some of their positions might be a good fit for someone with this kind of background, but there is no information from the company or from past employees.

Does ADT drug test?

Yes.
