What are the chances of Aldi hiring a felon?

Is Aldi on the Ban the Box list?

Ban the Box is a campaign that works to remove questions about criminal history from job applications. The Fair Chance Business Pledge is a pledge companies can take to commit to equal hiring practices.

Unfortunately, we cannot find any proof of Aldi participating in either program. While Aldi is an equal opportunity employer, their accessibility statement does not list anything about criminal records.

Does Aldi have special programs for hiring felons?

No they don’t.

What are the odds someone with a felony will get hired?

Average likelihood of hiring felons

Relaunch Pad asked: Does Aldi hire felons? Well, based on what we’ve found, we rank someone’s odds of getting hired at Aldi with a felony as average. Aldi generally seems to follow state guidelines regarding background checks. That means if your state usually has harsh policies regarding felonies, you should not expect Aldi to go to bat for you. However, there is no clear indication from Aldi that felons should not apply and our research has shown that some people did get hired at Aldi.

How to get hired at Aldi with a felony

What are some entry-level jobs?

With nearly 2,000 Aldi locations nationwide, you can bet they have a lot of entry-level jobs. The majority fall into the following categories:

  1. Store Associate: Are you a jack of all trades? A people person? You’ll need to be for this position. In some grocery stores, your job may be stocking, inventory or cashiering. At Aldi, store associates do any and every one of those jobs, as well as clean the store. If you’re still interested and have at least a high school diploma (or equivalent), Aldi encourages you to apply. Many store associate positions are full-time.
  2. Warehouse Associate: Have at least one year of warehouse experience elsewhere? That and a high school diploma or its equivalent will make you qualified to apply for this usually part-time position. Warehouse associates need to be able to lift at least 45 pounds multiple times throughout the day. If you are physically fit enough to do the job, it’s a great opportunity to make full-time pay on part-time hours.

You know the jobs. Now all that’s left to do is apply. Before you do, look below to read our recommended approach on how to get hired at Aldi.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

Before you go too far, look at our background check tab to make sure your felony will not automatically disqualify you from getting hired at Aldi. Once you think you’re in the clear, it’s time to start learning about your potential employer.

Research

Look at any given job posting and compare the traits and experience they ask for with your own. No resume? No problem, Relaunch Pad has a great guide on how felons can make a resume which helps them stand out.

Combine that with a great cover letter which directly explains why you are a good fit for the particular Aldi position you are applying for. For example, if you have any kind of experience providing good customer service to people, mention that you know Aldi values its customers highly and you would work to maintain that standard.

The cover letter and resume are your first and best chance to separate yourself from the crowd and make a good impression.

Once you have everything in order, fill out your application (make sure to apply for your specific job posting on their careers site) and send it in!

Interview

If your resume and cover letter impressed, you’ll be called in to interview. A little more research will allow you to say the right things and answer the tough questions.

On Aldi’s About page, they list consistency, simplicity and responsibility as their three core values. Have those memorized, and try to get creative and talk about how those values apply to you and how you’ll do the job. For example, talk about a past record of good attendance and relate that to being responsible.

Remember to be personable during the interview. Dress well and smile — cleanliness and friendliness will be more important in a customer-facing job than elsewhere.

On the warehouse side, it’s all about efficiency. Let them know about how your past warehouse experience went. If you don’t have any, explain what would make you good at it.

Does Aldi do background checks?

Online sources show that Aldi does perform background checks on all employees, in compliance with the state laws you’ll see below.

What to know about background checks:

For some states, seven years is the farthest a background check can go. If your felony happened seven years ago or more, it may not be a problem for you in these states

  • California
  • Colorado*
  • Kansas*
  • Maryland*
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire*
  • New York*
  • Texas*
  • Washington*

(* sometimes certain pay or salary bracket positions require one.)

More good news. In the following states, felonies in which you were declared “not-guilty” will not show up on a background check:

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana (limited check)
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York

We have some bad news, however. There are states where your entire record visible to background checks. Guilty convictions, not-guilty . . .  everything will be on the table. You may run into bigger challenges when applying in these states.

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • DC
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Indiana (extensive check)
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

Company ratings

Aldi scored an average 3.3 out of 5 on Glassdoor with a little over half of the reviewers saying they’d recommend the job to a friend.

A large amount of employees listed excellent pay and benefits as the biggest pro of working at Aldi.

The biggest con? You’re going to have to work hard for them. Many reviews say the average workday at Aldi keeps you very busy. Several reviews say work-life balance is lacking, so you can probably expect some overtime.

What felonies Aldi will not hire

There are no known offenses that would stop you right off the hop, but the section below details those that will potentially impact your chances.

What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?

Some Aldi positions require dealing with money and financial information. Those with fraud or money-related felonies may have a hard time getting a job here. Since Aldi employees must also interact with customers in a stressful environment, those with violent felonies such as assault may also have difficulty getting hired.

Lastly, those convicted of sex crimes may have difficulty getting hired, as they could potentially be working near children. You’ll want to focus on warehouse jobs instead if that applies to you.

Does Aldi hire sex offenders?

We’re not sure, actually. The comapny didn’t tell us and we couldn’t find anything about Aldi hiring sex offenders online.

Does Aldi drug test?

Online sources show that Aldi does drug test off-site, upon hire. If you are hired at Aldi and injured at work, they will drug test you as well. All applicants and employees should be able to pass a drug test at any time.
