Official company policy for hiring felons

We got in touch with Avnet to see if they hire former felons. This was their response:

“Our requirements vary by position. Some positions may allow for the hiring of an individual with prior felony conviction and others may not. Often, workers begin work at Avnet as a contractor and, after 6-12 months of successful employment, they are hired by Avnet into regular status positions. This is most common in our warehouse and logistics operations.”

Has Avnet hired felons in the past?

The Avnet representative didn’t respond when we asked if people with felonies have been hired before, but we’ve seen confirmation online that they have done so.

Does Avnet hire people with misdemeanors?

We could not find any proof of Avnet hiring people with misdemeanors, though suspect they’d be fine with that considering their stance on felonies.

The company might hire you with pending charges, considering they will hire confirmed felons. It will depend on your record.

Is Avnet on the Ban the Box list?

The Ban the Box campaign asks businesses to get rid of criminal history questions from their job applications. It led the way for other movements like the Fair Chance Business Pledge. The Pledge is another promise businesses make to treat all employees (including felons) fairly.

It doesn’t look like Avnet is part of the Ban the Box campaign. They’re not listed as part of the Fair Chance Business Pledge, either.

They are, however, an Equal Opportunity Employer,

What are some entry-level jobs?

Avnet says its entry-level jobs are in logistics and warehouse work. Since we know Avnet is mainly involved in shipping products, we know that most entry-level jobs will be as laborers.

However, Avnet is very sales-oriented, too. If you have any experience with marketing or selling things, you should apply for Inside Sales Representative, for example.

Warehouse workers can do various things. You might be on a line with an assigned station where you do one task every day, such as placing a warranty sticker on an electrical part. You might be involved in packaging and need to be able to lift twenty pound boxes all day. Or, you could end up wrapping pallets. If you’re working the hi-lo, you’ll be taking the pallets away and transporting other heavy objects with respect to both speed and safety.

Inside Sales Representatives will be in charge of two things: Keeping current customers happy and getting new clients. You need to be a people person and form good relationships with your customers. If you can keep current clients and get new ones, you will not only make your employer happy, you’ll get a bigger paycheck through commission, too.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

Avnet gave us a recommended approach for getting hired. They listed companies like ProLogistix and Randstad as staffing agencies where you could find a job with Avnet. If you are able to get one of these jobs and hold it for 6-12 months, it’s possible that you could be hired by Avnet and become an employee there.

To get a job at Avnet with a felony, do some research on how to get a job through a staffing agency.

If you have experience in shipping or have valuable skills like being able to operate a forklift, make sure to let your staffing agency know and put it in your resume. That will make them much more likely to want to place you with a company like Avnet. If you have any kind of experience working on a line, make sure to list that, too.

Handyman experience is valuable in warehouse settings, as well. You show you’re familiar with manual labor and are able to learn how to use tools.

Does Avnet do background checks?

Absolutely. The Avnet rep claimed that after a job offer is extended, they conduct a “suitability screening.” They say this background check happens after the job offer, but before employment.

What to know about background checks:

For some states, seven years is the limit of how far a background check can go. If your felony took place seven or more years ago, it will not be a factor in these states:

  • California
  • Colorado*
  • Kansas*
  • Maryland*
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire*
  • New York*
  • Texas*
  • Washington*

(* sometimes certain pay or salary bracket positions require one.)

Every bit helps. In certain states, crimes in which you were declared not guilty will not be disclosed on your background check. See them here:

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana (limited check)
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York

It can’t all be good news. If you live in one of the states below, they’ll look at your entire record. Guilty or not guilty, all charges and convictions will be visible. Keep that in mind when applying in these states:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • DC
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Indiana (extensive check)
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming
