Official company policy for hiring felons

As promised, we contacted Dayton Freight to find out their hiring policy for felons. This is what they said:

“We take everything into account when it comes to hiring.”

They don’t mention specifically whether or not they’ll hire felons, so you should fill out your application honestly and truthfully.

Has Dayton Freight hired felons in the past?

Dayton Freight didn’t say if they hire felons or not, so we asked if they’ve hired them in the past. This was their response:

“I cannot advise whether or not we have hired applicants with prior felony convictions.”

Doesn’t tell you a lot, does it? We also checked with our sources, but they were conflicting too. Sounds like it’s a solid maybe and that your record will have an impact. More on that to come!

Does Dayton Freight hire people with misdemeanors?

There isn’t enough information based on their company statement to know if they’ll hire people with misdemeanors.

Will Dayton Freight hire you with pending charges?

Dayton didn’t answer this question, and we were unable to find anything online about this, so we cannot say if pending charges will affect your application or not.

What are the chances of Dayton Freight hiring a felon?

Is Dayton Freight on the Ban the Box list?

Ban the Box is an effort by companies to remove the checkbox asking if you’ve been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony. This way they can focus on your talents and skills.

The Fair Chance Business Pledge is similar to this. It’s a promise made by employers to look at your prior work history and experience instead of judging you by your past.

Sadly, it doesn’t look like Dayton Freight participates in either of these programs. The good news is, however, that after checking out a few of their online applications, we noticed there aren’t any questions asking about previous convictions.

Does Dayton Freight have special programs for hiring felons?

We asked if they have any special hiring programs for felons. They answered with this:

“We do not provide programs specifically designed to provide work to former offenders.”

But don’t worry, a lot of companies don’t offer these types of programs. If you’re interested in finding one, contact your local employment office or workforce development agency for more details.

What are the odds that someone with a felony will get hired?

High likelihood of hiring felons

Your odds of getting hired at Dayton Freight with a felony are fairly high. Their industry is typically low-barrier for people with records looking for jobs, plus this company specifically will consider former offenders. So, if your crimes are for something small, you should apply for an entry-level position.

We know of a few other trucking companies that hire felons, though! You can check out our list here.

What are some entry-level jobs?

Dayton Freight has several entry-level job opportunities, including:

  • Customer service — Answering phones, doing data entry, assisting customers and drivers
  • Dock worker — Responsible for loading and unloading trucks
  • Driver — Takes cargo from point A to point B
  • General maintenance — Maintaining trucks, buildings and equipment

An entry-level position is a good place to start your career at Dayton Freight. It’ll give you a chance to learn your way around the company and give you a better chance at promotions later down the line.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

So, you’ve decided you’d like to get a job at Dayton Freight with a felony. That’s awesome! Let us walk you through the application and interview process.

Their process is pretty straightforward. You’ll go to their careers page and choose a job you’re qualified for and fill out the corresponding application.

You don’t necessarily need a resume, but it’s always good practice to have one on hand while filling out the information. If you’d like some extra help putting one together, we have you covered for that, too. Check out the guide Relaunch Pad developed specifically for felons.

Dayton Freight also needs to know your previous work history, including names, addresses and phone numbers of past employers. Don’t forget job titles and description of duties.

List any talents or skills pertaining to the job. For example, if you’ve worked in customer service before and know your way around an office, let them know. You want to drive a truck? Be sure they know if you have your CDL and when and where you obtained it. If working on the dock is more your style, tell them about any warehousing experience you have.

There are also a few things you’ll want to keep in mind to help you nail your interview and land the job at Dayton Freight:

First, you’ll want to dress business casual attire, like khakis and a nice shirt.

If you have any tattoos or piercings, it’s best to hide or remove them, if possible, until you know the company’s policy on these things.

Arrive 10-15 minutes early to fill out any pre-interview paperwork. It’ll also show them that you’re serious about a job with their company.

During the interview, talk up the skills and talents that you listed on your application. Be sure they also know where you picked them up. Was it in prison? From a previous job? Maybe you’re self-taught or took some classes?

This is also a good time to be honest about your past. They’ll find out the truth eventually anyway and it’ll be a good start to establishing trust with the company.

Does Dayton Freight do background checks?

We asked Dayton Freight if they do background checks, but the company didn’t answer the question. However, our sources say they will conduct one sometime during the hiring process.

Here’s what you need to know about background checks:

In the U.S., not all states conduct the same background check. Where you live will determine what the company can see. For instance, some states only go back seven years. So, if you live in one of the following and it’s only been six years since your conviction, you may want to wait a year before applying:

  • California
  • Colorado*
  • Kansas*
  • Maryland*
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire*
  • New York*
  • Texas*
  • Washington*

(* sometimes certain pay or salary bracket positions require one.)

Even better, these eight states won’t consider any cases where you were found not guilty:

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana (limited check)
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York

However, some states will see your whole record, including the not guilty verdicts. Be aware if you live in one of these states:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • DC
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Indiana (extensive check)
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

Company ratings

We did some internet research to bring you Dayton Freight’s ratings. Glassdoor.com gives them 4.3 out of 5 stars. Of the 175 employees that have left reviews, 96% would recommend their job to a friend and 99% are in favor of the company’s CEO. The great pay and flexible part-time hours are liked best, and difficulty finding a full-time position seems to be the biggest downfall.
