Official company policy for hiring felons

At the moment, we’re still waiting for a response from DHL concerning their hiring policies for former offenders. That being said, we have done some investigating to find answers for you.

DHL’s website doesn’t have a specific statement about this, either. However, we saw the following on their job applications:

DHL is an equal opportunity employer. We evaluate qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, veteran status, and other protected characteristics.

They also have a diversity statement! This means that they have a variety of people from all walks of life employed here.

This isn’t exactly a direct way to get a job at DHL with a felony, but it’s a start. See what else we found!

Has DHL hired felons in the past?

There were reports online that people with felony convictions have gotten work at this company before, but some said it may depend on how long ago the conviction was.

We’ll cover more information on how to get hired at DHL with a felony later. Read on!

Does DHL hire people with misdemeanors?

We’re not sure, actually. We couldn’t find any evidence, one way or the other.

Will DHL hire you with pending charges?

They might, considering they’ve hired confirmed former felons before.

What are the chances of DHL hiring a felon?

Is DHL on the Ban the Box list?

Having a felony conviction can be trying when you’re trying to get back on your feet. This is why the Ban the Box campaign set out to try to make the hiring process fair. They aim to convince employers to remove any questions about criminal backgrounds from their applications. This ensures the employer only sees an applicant’s qualifications and skills, not their past mistakes.

The Fair Chance Business Pledge is an oath companies take when they are dedicated to practicing fair hiring for everyone — including former offenders.

Unfortunately, DHL isn’t a supporter of either of these groups. Don’t let that frustrate you, though! These programs are not required to hire someone with a felony conviction.

Let’s continue to see how to get a job at DHL with a felony.

Does DHL have special programs for hiring felons?

DHL doesn’t offer these kinds of programs.

What are the odds someone with a felony will get hired?

High likelihood of hiring felons

The odds of you being hired at DHL with a felony are high. Loads of online reports say the company will hire a former offender, but mention the type of offense may play a role in hiring.

What are some entry-level jobs?

One of the best way s for someone with a criminal record to get on with a company is by starting at the bottom. These are called entry-level jobs and they can lead to better positions as you show your worth to the company! Check out some of the entry-level jobs here at DHL (they even have an option to select ‘entry-level’ to filter their jobs!):

  • General Clerk — You will be expected to prepare purchase orders, answer phones, do filing and assist with general office duties.
  • Part-Time Dockworker — A dock worker needs to be able to perform basic office duties such as filing and answering phones, as well as screening calls and visitors. You will also be expected to type letters and reports, so you need good grammar and punctuation skills.
  • Casual Courier — Pick up and deliver packages in a timely manner. You need to be able to stay on track and stick to a strict schedule and lift up to 70lbs. You’ll also need a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record, and excellent customer service skills.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

Applying for a job with a criminal conviction can be difficult, so we put together some helpful reminders for applying.

Application

DHL has a section designed to walk you through this process and also to let you know what they expect. Make sure you review the job qualifications for the job you are applying for to see if you meet their requirements.

Resume

A resume is always a great addition to any application. DHL requires one. It’s a snapshot of your experience and skills from previous jobs and shows the employer see you’ve got what it takes for the position you’re applying for.

We understand that most people struggle with the resume. We want to make sure you have the best possible chance at gaining employment here, so we created a guide just for this. We’ll even show you how to use jobs you held while incarcerated to your benefit. For example, you can talk about the delivery and customer service skills you learned by being a laundry attendant.

Interview

DHL has a three-step process: A phone, personal and assessment interview. Each of these are used to get to know you and your personality.

  • Phone Interviewing — Allow your charm and personality to shine through. When you speak, smile. The person on the other end can hear your smile.
  • Personal Interview — It’s suggested that you dress professionally. In other words, wear something you would wear to church or a church event. This is also the best possible time to discuss your background.
  • Assessment — If you’ve impressed them, you will be invited to their assessment center. There will be challenges and team exercises. Make sure you ask what the proper dress code will be.

Does DHL do background checks?

Yes, it was mentioned several times that DHL will require a background check.

Here are some things to keep in mind regarding background checks:

Only offenses that are less than seven years old will be seen by the following states:

  • Maryland*
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire*
  • New York*
  • Texas*

(*certain pay or salary bracket positions require a screening.)

The states that will only see guilty convictions are as follows:

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana (limited check)
  • Kentucky

Company ratings

We wanted to know what employees had to say about working here. Here is what we found when we reviewed glassdoor.com:

DHL was rated at 3.8 out of 5 stars. Apparently the score comes from having the ability to advance and a great work environment. However, if you don’t like a lot of overtime or constant change, this may not be a good company for you.

What felonies DHL will not hire

We don’t know! There are bound to be some, but they didn’t share which with us. See the next section for what our research suggested.

What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?

A few convictions we feel might stand in your way are as follows:

  • A theft crime, including identity theft, may make getting your foot in the door extremely difficult. Packages being delivered to individuals and companies will be the responsibility of DHL, so they will take extra steps to protect them.
  • Driving offenses such as DUI or DWI are something that will be looked at closely if you’re applying for a driving position.
  • Violent or sexual crimes will also be looked upon harder for certain positions. If you’re applying for a job that interacts with the public, these offenses may limit your chances.

Does DHL hire sex offenders?

We don’t know for sure, but have our doubts based on our research.

Does DHL drug test?

You can expect a drug screen.
