Official company policy for hiring felons

As always, we checked in with the company to find out about their policy for hiring felons. Unfortunately, the company has yet to answer our questions. Hopefully we can make contact in the future.

In the meantime, we have done a little bit of research. Based on our findings, Exelon will consider hiring former felons. However, the candidate’s background will factor into the eventual hiring decision.

Has Exelon hired felons in the past?

Based on the fact that Exelon has an apparent willingness to consider hiring former felons, it is likely that they have done so in the past.

However, we have not been able to track down any actual former felons that have experience working there. This isn’t a huge deal, though it may indicate that Exelon is very selective when considering former felons.

Does Exelon hire people with misdemeanors?

Given that Exelon will consider candidates with felonies, it’s likely they’ll also consider people with misdemeanors.

Will Exelon hire you with pending charges?

Exelon hires people with convicted felony offenses so we are confident they’ll hire people with pending charges if they’re the right kind.

What are the chances of Exelon hiring a felon?

Is Exelon on the Ban the Box list?

The Ban the Box Movement works to keep questions relating to criminal history off of job applications. Some hiring managers don’t look farther than this box when eliminating potential candidates from consideration, so removing these questions can be very helpful for those of us with criminal records.

There is also the Fair Chance Business Pledge. Businesses that make this promise are proclaiming that they will not discriminate in their hiring practices.

Both programs provide excellent opportunities for former felons. Unfortunately, though, Exelon is not involved in either.

So how much does this matter? Not a ton. While participation in these programs is always good news, many businesses will hire former felons without being involved.

Does Exelon have special programs for hiring felons?

Some companies will also feature special programs that are designed to make it a little bit easier for former felons to get hired. While these programs are great, they are also rare and Exelon doesn’t have any.

What are the odds someone with a felony will get hired?

Uncertain likelihood of hiring felons

Unfortunately, much of Exelon’s hiring process remains a mystery. We have yet to hear back from them and there’s not a strong online. We do know that they are open to hiring former felons, but we don’t know how they make their ultimate decisions.

We also know that they don’t participate in the Fair Chance Business Pledge of the Ban the Box Movement, and they don’t have any special programs for hiring former felons.

Therefore, at this point, we have to say that your chances of getting a job at Exelon with a felon are uncertain. That said, it’s possible that once we hear from the company we will be able to upgrade those odds somewhat.

How to get hired at Exelon with a felony

What are some entry-level jobs?

It may be possible to get a job at Exelon with a felony, but what sort of jobs are we talking about anyway? As an energy company, they have many careers all over the country. Most of their jobs are technical in nature, requiring the engineering and upkeep of complicated equipment.

However, if you don’t have that sort of background, you may still be able to find work in their customer service wing of the company where you’ll be answering customer complaints and concerns as they arise.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

Getting hired at Exelon is going to require a really good application. Whether you are applying for a skilled position or a more entry-level job in the customer service wing, you will still need to show the ways that you are qualified for the opening.

For example, if you have worked in engineering or electrical upkeep in the past, feature this information prominently in your application. The same is true for applicants that want a customer service job. In this case, there are a wide range of backgrounds that are appropriate.

For example, even though clerks at McDonald’s are not doing work that is similar to that of an Exelon employee, the people skills involved in the trade translate well.

You may even want to highlight customer service work you did in prison. It can actually be helpful to highlight your rehabilitation and spotlight the positives of your life experience. If you are uncertain how to craft a killer resume, a friend or even a career center may be of use to you.

Let’s say you nailed the application. Next, you will need to contend with the interview. For this part of the process, show up in nice clothes and try to cover up any tattoos or piercings.

Above else though, just be yourself! If you are in for an interview it means they think you are a good candidate. Now is the time to prove them right!

Does Exelon do background checks?

Exelon will do background checks. However, what they find out will largely depend on where you live. For example, some states only look seven years back into your history. Here is a list of those locations:

  • California
  • Colorado*
  • Kansas*
  • Maryland*
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire*

*States with an asterisk may feature heightened checks for higher pay brackets.

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana (limited check)
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York

Finally, there are some states that dive deep and include everything. In these states, Exelon will learn about your entire history:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • DC
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Indiana (extensive check)

What felonies Exelon will not hire

There are a number of charges that will likely hold you back, but Exelon hasn’t shared what they ae with us. The next section will cover our best guesses.

What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?

While we don’t know a ton about the company’s approach to hiring, it does seem likely that the nature of your offense will weigh on their eventual decision. That’s just the way things usually are.

Because some of the jobs require engineering and the use of sensitive equipment, substance abuse-related offenses might be avoided.

And, for those with violent or sexual offenses, you may find a hard time getting hired in the customer service branch.

Some companies also steer clear of offenses that they deem as major. This is especially true when the crime was committed recently.

Does Exelon hire sex offenders?

There’s no evidence of this, but it is a possibility.

Does Exelon drug test?

It seems that the company will screen for drugs before making a hire.
