Official company policy for hiring felons

We’ve been unable to contact Facebook; however, we found this on their careers page:

“Facebook is proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action employer. We do not discriminate based upon race, religion, color, national origin, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, status as a protected veteran, status as an individual with a disability, genetic information, or other applicable legally protected characteristics. We also consider qualified applicants with criminal histories, consistent with applicable federal, state and local law. You may view Facebook’s Pay Transparency Policy and Equal Employment Opportunity is the Law notice by clicking on their corresponding links. Additionally, Facebook participates in the E-Verify program in certain locations, as required by law.”

It’s great to see that they’ll consider those with criminal histories!

What are the chances of Facebook hiring a felon?

Is Facebook on the Ban the Box list?

Facebook isn’t on the Ban the Box list, but they have signed the Fair Chance Business Pledge.

What are these programs, you ask? These programs are designed to give the ex-offender a second chance at life, without judgement of their past.

Ban the Box is a list of companies that have committed to remove the checkbox from their application asking about convictions. Even though Facebook isn’t on the Ban the Box list, their application doesn’t ask the question about prior arrests.

The Fair Chance Business Pledge is an initiative for employers to focus on your skills, talents and experience, rather than your criminal background.

Does Facebook have special programs for hiring felons?

They don’t offer any special programs for felons at this time. However, if these kinds of programs interest you, get in touch with your local employment agency or workforce development office to see potential assistance options.

What are the odds that someone with a felony will get hired?

Average likelihood of hiring felons

We give your odds of getting hired at Facebook with a felony as average. Although they say that they’ll consider those with a criminal history and their application doesn’t ask about convictions, there aren’t a lot of online reports stating the company has hired former offenders. The type of record will have a big impact here. Read on for more!

How to get hired at Facebook with a felony

What are some entry-level jobs?

Facebook isn’t exactly entry-level friendly. However, they do have paid intern positions in computer programming, engineering and related jobs for those still in school or recently graduated.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

How do you get hired at Facebook with a felony? You make sure your application stands out from the rest. We’ll look at customizing your resume to match what they’re looking for:

List your education first. Facebook is looking for applicants with a college degree in computer-related fields.

Second, include all experience related to the job you’re applying for. Have you programmed a computer? Do you know how to write code? Can you troubleshoot computer issues?

Next, let them know where you picked up this experience. Did you take classes in prison? Are you self-taught? Do you have prior work experience?

Finally, double-check your grammar, spelling and punctuation. You don’t want any small mistakes on your resume.

When it comes to the interview, take everything we discussed above and amp it up. Highlight a time when you stood out from the others in your department or field

Above all else, be truthful about your past. You don’t want them finding out the hard way and have it cost your job.

Does Facebook do background checks?

We don’t know if they’ll do a background check. Keep in mind that most companies do some sort of check, even if it’s to verify you’re legally allowed to work for their company.

Here’s what you need to know about background checks:

Background checks vary from state-to-state. For example, the states in this list only go back seven years:

  • California
  • Colorado*
  • Kansas*
  • Maryland*
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire*
  • New York*
  • Texas*
  • Washington*

(* sometimes certain pay or salary bracket positions require one.)

These eight states won’t look at any not guilty verdicts:

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana (limited check)
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York

There are still some states that’ll see your whole record. Be aware if you live in one of these states:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • DC
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Indiana (extensive check)
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?

Does Facebook hire felons? It looks like they might. However, there are certain felonies that might hurt your chances. Since you’ll be working with computers, cybercrimes, identity theft, embezzlement, fraud or other “white-collar” crimes will make it difficult to get a job at Facebook.

Does Facebook hire sex offenders?

We aren’t sure on this one, since Facebook did not tell us if they hire sex offenders. They might, we just don’t know.

Does Facebook drug test?

While we’re unsure if Facebook will ask for a drug test during the hiring process, it’s our suggestion that you move forward as if they do.
