As always, we reached out to Frito-Lay to find out about their hiring policies. Unfortunately, they have not had a chance to reply to our questions yet. We’ll keep following up in the hopes of updating this article.
In the meantime, we made a point of doing our own research. We went online to see if we could find any evidence of their hiring policies.
Our findings indicate that they do not have any policies that would keep them from hiring former felons.
Has Frito-Lay hired felons in the past?
Yes! We were actually able to find many instances where the company hired former felons. While we still don’t know how they make those sorts of decisions, this is clearly a good sign.
Does Frito-Lay hire people with misdemeanors?
It looks like Frito-Lay has an openness to hiring people with misdemeanors. Most of the time, when a company is willing to hire former felons, it is a given that they will also hire people with misdemeanors.
Is Frito-Lay on the Ban the Box list?
The Ban the Box movement works to eliminate questions about a candidate’s criminal history from job applications. The idea is to allow candidates to be seen for their skills instead of the mistakes of their past.
Then there is the Fair Chance Business Pledge. Companies that take this pledge are promising to be fair in their hiring practices.
Frito-Lay actually has signed the Fair Chance Business Pledge. Technically, the Pledge was signed by Pepsico, the organization’s parent company. However, you can assume that the policy applies to Frito-Lay, as well as other Pepsi brands.
This effectively proves that it is possible to get a job at Frito-Lay with a felony.
Does Frito-Lay have special programs for hiring felons?
Some companies have special programs that specifically target former felons. The objective of these programs is to make it easier to get hired.
Unfortunately, we haven’t found any evidence that Frito-Lay has these programs. This isn’t terribly surprising. Programs for former felons are rare. The lack of a program doesn’t hurt your chances.
What are the odds someone with a felony will get hired?
So, what do we know? Frito-Lay is open to hiring former felons. They’ve hired former felons in the past and signed the Fair Chance Business Pledge. Even though we haven’t gotten a response from the company yet, the things we’ve learned look pretty good.
Therefore, we think your chances of getting hired are high. With the right qualifications, you should be able to land yourself a job here.
What are some entry-level jobs?
We also looked into some potential entry-level careers. The company offers both maintenance jobs for the factory and merchandising jobs for stores.
Merchandisers go into grocery stores on behalf of the company and fill up the displays. Consequently, the hours are usually very early in the morning, though they may vary substantially from place to place.
Factories usually do shift work, so you can expect to work during the day or night.
How to get hired at Frito-Lay with a felony
As with any job, you will want to make sure that you submit a good application. It will help to highlight relevant experience.
If you are applying for a factory job, any maintenance or factory experience will be very useful. For merchandising positions, grocery store experience will work in your favor. You need to show them you know your way around a warehouse or know how to handle their stock.
The job description will tell you what they want, then you match your skills to it!
No matter what you put on your resume, make sure the submission is refined and well-polished. To ensure this is the case, it can help to get a second pair of eyes on the document. Career centers are great places to receive professional insight for your resume and the interview, by the way!
Once your polished application is received, you will (hopefully) be called in for an interview. For this part of the process, you will want to come in dressed semi-formal. This means wearing nice clothes and hiding your tattoos and piercings.
It’s also very important that you show confidence. It’s certainly natural to be nervous before an interview, but remember that they only called you there in the first place because they felt you were a good candidate.

Based on what we can see, it looks like Frito-Lay will do background checks.
Here’s what you need to know about background checks:
Where you live can have a big impact on what shows up. For example, some states limit how far back their checks go. In the following states, Frito-Lay will only look seven years into your past:
- New Hampshire*
- New York*
*certain pay or salary bracket positions sometimes require one.
Other states will only detail crimes you have been convicted of. In these places, not guilty verdicts will not show up on your background check:
- Indiana (limited check)
- New York
Sadly though, most states include everything in their background checks. In these places, background checks will reveal your entire history:
- Indiana (extensive check)
- New Jersey
- North Carolina
- North Dakota
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
- West Virginia
As always, we also went online to get a sense of what it is like to work at Frito-Lay. We found they have an average rating on Glassdoor of 3.1 out of 5 stars.
Their highest rating was 3.7 for compensation. The lowest rating was 2.2 for work-life balance.
What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?
The type of felony you have can impact what jobs you are eligible for. For example, it may be hard to get hired for a factory position if you have a history of substance abuse.
And, if you have sexual or violent crimes on your record, you may not be eligible for positions in grocery stores.
