Official company policy for hiring felons

When we contacted High’s, here is what they told us:

“We do not have a specific program designed to provide work to former offenders. That being said, our company policy does not specifically preclude any individuals with prior felony convictions from applying and being considered for employment. We do have certain criteria in place that may prevent passing of a background check due to the nature of our work, but this does not broadly encompass all checks that include a felony conviction. We will run a background check and review each individual. Many of our roles do not require experience, so it may be a good opportunity.”

Lauren Pierce, VP of HR

Has High’s hired felons in the past?

High’s didn’t provide a direct answer to this question, but their response does come across as hopeful. We failed to find online support that they’ve hired former felons in the past, though.

So let’s continue reading so we can advise you the best tips on how to get a job at High’s with a felony.

Does High’s hire people with misdemeanors?

High’s did tell us that a felony conviction wouldn’t disqualify you, so, with that being said, it’s almost a sure thing that they would consider someone with a misdemeanor as well.

Will High’s hire you with pending charges?

High’s didn’t say anything for certain about this, but we suspect they will hire people iwth pending charges.

What are the chances of High's hiring a felon?

Is High’s on the Ban the Box list?

The Ban the Box isn’t supported by High’s.

But what is the Ban the Box? The Ban the Box campaign was created to assist former offenders in returning to the workforce. The campaign’s goal is to urge employers to remove all questions regarding previous criminal convictions from their applications. By doing so, this keeps the employers attention on your skills — not your criminal record.

Another initiative known as the Fair Chance Business Pledge is also assisting those with criminal convictions. This is an agreement made by companies that agree to provide fair hiring practices for those with or without felony convictions.

Even though High’s doesn’t support either of these programs, that doesn’t mean you can’t be hired here.

Does High’s have special programs for hiring felons?

No. High’s told us they don’t offer any of these programs. Their website says they’ll do tuition reimbursement, which is always a wonderful benefit for any job.

What are the odds someone with a felony will get hired?

Average likelihood of hiring felons

How to get hired at High's with a felony

What are some entry-level jobs?

High’s main focus will be like any industry that is in the customer service field . . . their customers. Here are a few entry-level positions they have to offer:

Customer Service Representative — As a customer service representative, you’ll need excellent communication skills. Some requirements will include: handling customer payments, team work, stocking, and cleaning. Be prepared to work all shifts including holidays!

Food Service Representative — You must be able to follow proper handling guidelines for all food. Great customer service and communication skills will be needed for this position, as well as being able to maintain inventory and ordering products and supplies.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

Using all the information we gathered through our research, we were able to put together some suggestions to help you in applying with High’s. Here are a few key points:

Application & resume

High’s application is available online, so you’ll need access to a computer to apply. If you don’t own a computer, don’t worry. You can go to your local library and use theirs for free!

Since we know most people dread making their resume (which you should update before you apply), we put together a guide that will help you organize your resume. It even shows you the best ways to add the skills you learned while you were incarcerated! Those canteen, laundry and kitchen jobs all required customer service, inventory and stocking skills. Include this on your resume! And, as luck would have it, those are all skills required for an entry-level job at High’s!

Interview

Here are a few for you to keep in mind that will help you get hired at a convenience store:

  1. Make sure you are dressed appropriately. A nice outfit that would be worn to a church function is a great choice.
  2. Try and arrive early. Allowing the interviewer to see that you’re punctual shows your ability to meet schedules and your interest in the job.
  3. Since they ask for a resume to be uploaded, we would suggest bringing a few hard copies with you. This is always a good idea because the person interviewing you may not have seen your resume.
  4. This is also your chance to open up about your background. Encourage questions about your criminal history so you can show them how much you’ve grown.
  5. Ask your own questions. Nothing shows interest better than asking for more information.

Does High's do background checks?

Yes, they told us that they do a background check.

Here is something to keep in mind regarding background checks:

Were you aware that there are finally some states that will only look at an offense if it’s less than seven years old? Here are those states:

  • California
  • Colorado
  • Kansas
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire
  • New York
  • Texas
  • Washington

Luckily there are states that will look at only guilty convictions. They are as follows:

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana (limited check)
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York

Unfortunately, we still have many states that will still look at everything. Those states include:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • DC
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Indiana (extensive check)
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

Company ratings

High’s was rated 3.5 out of 5 stars on glassdoor.com. This is a great score for a convenience store. Looking at their reviews, there wasn’t too much provided to explain why they didn’t have a perfect score. We did see there were complaints about HR and the District Managers. Their top review was praising them for all the team work on the job.

What felonies High’s will not hire

High’s didn’t tell us! We’re not sure what specific felonies would turn them off of an applicant. Online sources gave us hints to what might cause issues, though, and we’ve put those below.

What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?

As with any job, there may be a few offenses that will have a hard time getting hired with High’s. Here are a few we think might have some difficulty:

  • Any theft or fraudulent use of a credit card charge might be looked at closely since most of their positions require you to handle cash, credit cards and merchandise.
  • A violent or sexual offense may also have a hard time getting hired since all of High’s positions work directly with the public.

Does High’s hire sex offenders?

They might, but it’s unlikely that High’s hires sex offenders.

Does High’s drug test?

There wasn’t anything found that spoke on this topic. Our best advice would be to be prepared anyway.
