Being a California-based company, they’re bound by the state’s Fair Chance Act that requires employers to hold off on any criminal record check until after they’ve made a job offer. The odds are high, in our opinion, since:
- Homeroom doesn’t ask about convictions on their job applications.
- The company says that they don’t do background checks.
- They told us they hire people with criminal records.

What are some entry-level jobs?
The best example of an entry-level job is Team Member. The main responsibility is to work as part of a team to serve customers in the restaurant. You don’t need to have any level of education or type of prior experience, but here’s what they’re looking for:
- Available to work weekends
- 18 or older
- Eligible to work in the U.S.
- Awesome and energetic

How to get hired at Homeroom with a felony
To get a job at Homeroom with a felony, make sure you emphasize any experience and qualifications. They say that they receive a lot of applications every week, so make yours stand out with these tips:
- Take the time to write a dynamite resume that includes:
- The highest level of education that you’ve completed.
- Details of your specific work experience.
- All special certifications, especially those related to food safety, food preparation and first aid.
- Any awards or prizes you’ve won, even if you were just runner up at a BBQ contest.
- Having someone else vouch for you is worth its weight in gold, so:
- Ask former employers if you can use them as a reference.
- Even better, get a recommendation letter from an old boss that you can include each time you apply for a job.
- Find a few people to be character references, such as your church pastor, landlord or someone at a charity where you’ve volunteered.
- Follow-up, follow-up, follow-up! After applying online, make a good impression by:
- Dropping by the restaurant and introducing yourself to the hiring manager.
- Connecting with someone who works there to ask their advice about how to get hired at Homeroom.
- Responding quickly and pleasantly when you get a call for an interview.

Does Homeroom do background checks?
Here’s something worth knowing — Homeroom told us that they don’t usually do background checks!
We have some important information below about how background checks are done across the country:
Here are the states where background checks don’t include any criminal convictions older than seven years:
- New Hampshire*
- New York*
(* sometimes certain pay or salary brackets require one.)
These few states don’t include any not guilty verdicts in a criminal record check:
- Indiana (limited check)
- New York
However, across most of the United States, a background check shows your whole record. Here are the states where this is the case:
- Indiana (extensive check)
- New Jersey
- North Carolina
- North Dakota
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
- West Virginia
We could find only one employee rating for the company. It was on glassdoor.com and, unfortunately, it wasn’t a very high score! This means the individual was likely motivated to write a review. The company responded, though, so they clearly care about their reputation!
With that said, there are hundreds of ratings from restaurant customers who give Homeroom a score 4 out of 5 and higher. Why is this important? Well, unhappy people don’t give 4-star service!
What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?
Homeroom relies on good team players. Understandably, if you have a criminal background for assault-related offenses it will make it harder for you to get a job with the company.
Also, if you’ve ever been charged with an offense after tampering with someone’s food, Homeroom may wonder if they can trust you to work for them. Getting into trouble with the law for serving alcohol to underage customers is also a problem. The restaurant manager needs to know that you’ll take your responsibilities seriously if they hire you.
