Yes, they do. JSJ Staffing told us:
“We run a background check on all applicants either before or immediately after a job placement in order to avoid sending a former offender to a position where the employer is not felony-friendly.”
The job application that can be downloaded under resources gives more information. Here’s what it says about how does JSJ Staffing do background checks:
“For purposes of employment with JSJ, convictions include sentenced to confinement, paid a fine, time served, placed on probation (including deferred adjudication) and court-ordered restitution. A conviction may not disqualify you, but a false statement will.”
It asks if you’ve “ever been convicted, pled guilty or subjected to a deferred adjudication on a felony charge” and for the details.
Here are a few things you need to know about how each state deals with background checks to help you fill in this information:
Some states only check back seven years in a background check. So if you live in the following states, don’t worry if your criminal record is older than that:
- California
- Colorado*
- Kansas*
- Maryland*
- Massachusetts
- Montana
- Nevada
- New Hampshire*
- New York*
- Texas*
- Washington*
(* sometimes certain pay or salary brackets require one.)
Here are the states that won’t share not guilty verdicts in a criminal record check:
- Alaska
- California
- Hawaii
- Indiana (limited check)
- Kentucky
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- New York
But in these states, your whole record (including not guilty verdicts) will be reviewed:
- Alabama
- Arizona
- Arkansas
- Connecticut
- DC
- Delaware
- Florida
- Idaho
- Indiana (extensive check)
- Iowa
- Louisiana
- Maine
- Mississippi
- Missouri
- Nebraska
- New Jersey
- North Carolina
- North Dakota
- Ohio
- Oregon
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
- Utah
- Vermont
- Virginia
- West Virginia
- Wisconsin
- Wyoming
Company ratings
There aren’t many ratings for the company online. This means there’s less information to go on from people who’ve worked for the company.
For instance, birdeye.com has 28 reviews from staff and business clients. JSJ Staffing gets a rating of 3.5 out of 5 on this site. Indeed.com gives them a similar rating — 3.7 out of 5 with only three reviews. There are also a handful of reviews on the company’s Facebook page. However, they don’t appear on glassdoor.com.
In general, business clients seem quite happy with the service the company provides and the quality of job candidates referred to them. The only complaint from workers is about sometimes not getting paid on time.
What felonies JSJ Staffing will not hire
They didn’t give us a specific list, and it may depend more on the clients they’re hiring for than on their own policies.
What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?
If you’ve committed any offense that suggests you might not show up to work on time, or at all, this will be a problem. So, what type of offenses are we talking about? Well, anything involving drugs or alcohol. In addition, you could put yourself or your co-workers in danger if you’re using illegal substances. JSJ Staffing wants you to assure them that you don’t have a drug or alcohol problem that will interfere with work.
Can you cooperate with others on the job site? Any past charges involving harassment, intimidation or assault will have to be explained. The success of the company depends on the candidates they refer and the people they hire being agreeable and team players.
As with any staffing agency, the company with the opening has some say as to who gets hired. Consider what company the job is for and look at your record. The best thing you can do is make sure you apply for jobs that don’t relate to your convictions!
Does JSJ Staffing hire sex offenders?
We’re not sure if they will hire sex offenders or not because they didn’t say and there’s nothing about it online.
Does JSJ Staffing drug test?
Yes, they do. Their application explains that you must pass a drug and alcohol screening test before you’re hired. What’s more, you have to be screened for drug and alcohol use if you’re involved in a workplace accident.
