What are the chances of Redner's Market hiring a felon?

Is Redner’s Market on the Ban the Box list?

Not that we’ve seen.

The Ban the Box campaign and the Fair Chance Business Pledge are two great initiatives that seek to help those with a record in the workplace.

Ban the Box works to encourage employers to leave criminal history questions off their applications. This is important because it lets former felons get through based on their qualifications, not their mistakes. The Pledge works to encourage employers to give those with a criminal record more opportunities for advancement within their organizations.

We filled out a Redner’s Market application packet and found that they are not part of the Ban the Box campaign.

Does Redner’s Market have any special programs for hiring felons?

Redner’s Market gave us the following response:

“We don’t work through any type of agency, but will always consider applications as they come in. Many years back we did work with a rehab center across the street from our Warrington location and would have incarcerated individuals working for us in various positions. Our location in Warrington has since closed, so we don’t use it any longer.”

Well that’s too bad! But please check with your local unemployment office. They typically do have programs in place to help those coming out of prison.

What are the odds someone with a felony will get hired?

High likelihood of hiring felons

We think that the chances are high that a person will get hired at Redner’s Market with a felony. Their response is encouraging, and they’ve done so in the past. However, they are quick to point out that there are certain criminal charges they avoid. We couldn’t find information from the community about them hiring felons in our research, so we aren’t sure how often they do so.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

We’re always glad to hear from a company willing to hire former felons, but you’re probably still wondering how to get a job at Redner’s Market with a felony. You should always start at their employment page and find some jobs you are interested in applying for. When you begin the process, you will have to set up an online account on their jobs page. The first step is to upload a resume.

Do you have a resume? How does it look? We want you to know that we’ve created a guide to help you through the resume process. You may not realize it, but you can probably build a good resume with the experience you have!

Think about the jobs and education you had before you went to prison. How about the experience you gained behind bars? Jobs in prison are valuable, and not just because of the “good time” you earned towards your sentence. These jobs teach skills needed in the real world, such as:

  • Organization skills
  • Teamwork with coworkers
  • Staying on task
  • Discipline while on-the-job
  • Communication skills

If you took any vocational or self-improvement classes in prison, those also offer skills and lessons that you took with you when you left. Many prison vocational courses revolve around food safety and preparation. Some focus on HVAC or brick masonry. Any of these courses provide real-world work skills.

After your application is filled out and submitted, your work is just beginning. Don’t wait around for an interview call-back. Use the time to get prepared for the interview. For example, get a nice set of clothes. If you don’t have any available or are a little low on cash, check with your local unemployment office, Goodwill or Salvation Army.

First impressions matter with interviews, so you should also:

  • Get your haircut and trim any facial hair before the interview.
  • Cover your visible tattoos if possible. We don’t know their company policy.
  • Right before you go, put on some deodorant and brush your teeth.

You will face typical interview questions, but you should be ready to discuss your past criminal history as well. Remember, your past doesn’t define your future. This is a company willing to hire former felons, so let them know you are ready to be a part of the Redner’s Market team.

Does Redner's Market do background checks?

Yes, Redner’s Market told us that:

“If a candidate lists some type of criminal offense, we will do background checks to confirm all of these charges and will put that into consideration so it won’t conflict with our company ideals.”

Depending on where you live, you could face varying levels of background checks as well.

Here’s what you need to know about background checks:

There are some states that choose to show only seven years of your criminal history. That is a great thing, especially if you have been out for a while. These states include:

  • California
  • Colorado*
  • Kansas*
  • Maryland*
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire*
  • New York*
  • Texas*
  • Washington*

*sometimes certain pay or salary bracket positions require one.

Other states have decided to only show charges in which you were found guilty of. They leave off the rest, including your not guilty verdicts and charges that were thrown out. Those states are:

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana (limited check)
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York

Unfortunately, there are still many states that show everything on a background check. This includes any charges you have faced, whether they were dismissed or not. These states include:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • DC
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Indiana (intensive check)
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina

What felonies Redner’s Market will not hire

So maybe it’s not if but when does Redner’s Market hire felons? We know they are willing to do so. However, just like other places that welcome former felons, some convictions will have a harder time gaining employment at Redner’s Market. Here is what they told us:

“…we do have some expectations and criteria as we are a public company and want to make sure we have a safe environment for our employees and guests. We generally will stay away from violent crimes, theft-related crimes, and since we are a drug-free workplace, we tend to gravitate away from significant drug-related crimes.”

What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?

Based on what they’ve said and the industry they’re in, we also suspect that they will avoid anyone who has a sex crime conviction. Redner’s Market made a point to say they want to have a safe environment for their employees and guests. While we know that a prior conviction doesn’t define a person’s life, many companies are not willing to take a risk.

Does Redner’s Market hire sex offenders?

We don’t think they do, because of what they said above.

Does Redner’s Market drug test?

Based on our research, it looks like Redner’s Market does perform a pre-employment drug test on applicants.
