Because we know Spinx will hire people with felony convictions on an individual basis, so it’s safe to assume they’ll hire those with misdemeanors as well.
Is Spinx on the Ban the Box list?
Ban the Box is a list of companies that have agreed to remove the checkbox asking if you’ve been convicted of a crime from their application. Spinx isn’t on this list. They also haven’t signed the Fair Chance Business Pledge, which is a pledge by companies to look past your criminal history and to hire based on skills, talents and strengths instead.
However, we took some time to fill out their online application, and even though Spinx isn’t on the Ban the Box list, they don’t have the checkbox on their application either.

Spinx also offers a 401(k) retirement plan, health, dental and vision insurance, and paid vacation time after six months.
How to get hired at Spinx with a felony
Now that we know you have a pretty good chance of getting hired at Spinx with a felony, how do you apply? First thing’s first. Let’s start by sprucing up your resume to match what Spinx is looking for.
List any experience you have in a convenience store setting and include all responsibilities and job duties. If you have experience stocking shelves, running a cash register or credit card machine, housekeeping, or even cooking food, let them know. This is the type of experience Spinx is looking for.
Also, be sure to mention where you picked up this experience, whether you received special training in prison, at a previous place of employment or if you’re self-taught.
Enlist the help of a friend or family member to go over your resume to make sure everything looks right. If you don’t have someone to look at it with you, don’t worry, Successful Release has a resume guide designed to help former felons.
Once you’ve completed your resume, you’re ready to fill out the online application on Spinx’s career page.
Knowing you want to be prepared for your interview, we put together these tips to help you get hired at Spinx with a felony:
- Arrive 10-15 minutes early. It’s your first chance to make a good impression by showing the company that you can be on-time.
- Dress business casual. While you don’t need a fancy suit and tie, you don’t want to show up for your interview in jeans and a t-shirt. A pair of khakis and a nice shirt for the gentlemen and a skirt or dress pants and blouse for the ladies will work just fine.
- Keep good eye contact throughout the interview. Look the other person in the eyes. It’ll show them you’re paying attention.
- Keep your answers positive. They need to know they’re hiring someone who will be friendly and positive in any circumstance.
- Be honest. Don’t lie or hide the details about your past. If you do and Spinx finds out — and they will — you’ll risk losing your offer of employment.
Does Spinx do background checks?
Online sources aren’t consistent about whether or not Spinx will conduct a background check. However, keep in mind that most companies will need to at least verify you can legally work for them.
Here’s what you need to know about background checks:
Background checks vary from state-to-state. It’s important to know what employers can look at in your state. For example, if you live in one of the states on this list, they won’t show convictions from more than seven years ago:
- California
- Colorado*
- Kansas*
- Maryland*
- Massachusetts
- Montana
- Nevada
- New Hampshire*
- New York*
- Texas*
- Washington*
(* sometimes certain pay or salary bracket positions require one.)
And these states won’t bother with any not guilty verdicts:
- Alaska
- California
- Hawaii
- Indiana (limited check)
- Kentucky
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- New York
However, be aware if your state is on this list. Employers will see your whole record, including the not guilty verdicts:
- Alabama
- Arizona
- Arkansas
- Connecticut
- DC
- Delaware
- Florida
- Idaho
- Indiana (extensive check)
- Iowa
- Louisiana
- Maine
- Mississippi
- Missouri
- Nebraska
- New Jersey
- North Carolina
- North Dakota
- Ohio
- Oregon
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
- Utah
- Vermont
- Virginia
- West Virginia
- Wisconsin
- Wyoming
