Does United Rentals hire felons?
Official company policy for hiring felons
When we contacted United Rentals and asked straight up if they hire former felons, this is the response they gave us:
“We are an Equal Opportunity Employer of women, minorities, protected veterans and individuals with disabilities. Mutual respect for the dignity and fundamental rights of all persons defines our culture and is an essential ingredient for success.”
Has United Rentals hired felons in the past?
United Rentals didn’t say that they hire former felons. However, if you can convince the right branch manager that you will contribute to the company’s culture in a positive way, then anything is possible. So, does United Rentals hire felons? It’s a solid maybe.
Does United Rentals hire people with misdemeanors?
Based on the company’s statements, it’s uncertain whether they’ll hire applicants with less serious offenses on their records, like misdemeanors.
Is United Rentals on the Ban the Box list?
Ban the Box refers to an initiative by civil rights groups to help people with criminal records get jobs by removing the check box on employment applications that ask if you have any criminal convictions.
Eleven states so far have adopted this initiative — California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington — and have actually mandated the removal of any conviction history questions from job applications for all private employers. This is a big help if you are applying to jobs in these states.
United Rentals is not an outward supporter of the Ban the Box movement. They made it known that they do a criminal background check and you will see a box on their application asking about your criminal record.
Fair Chance Business Pledge
The Fair Chance Business Pledge became well-known in 2016. It’s a call to action for private sector employers to eliminate the barriers offenders face when trying to re-enter society.
United Rentals has not definitively taken the Fair Chance Business Pledge, but they specifically said in the statement they gave us that they believe in a culture that embodies fairness to all people. This tells us that felons or those with lesser criminal offenses are considered fairly as well.
Does United Rentals have special programs for hiring felons?
United Rentals doesn’t have any special programs for helping people with past criminal records get a job.
What are the odds someone with a felony will get hired?
After extensive research, Successful Release concludes that getting a job with United Rentals with a criminal record is uncertain.
They’re not on the Ban the Box list and have not taken the Fair Chance Business Pledge, but from the company’s own statement to us, it’s possible you can still get a position here. It’s worth your time to apply if you think you’d be a good fit and a valuable asset.
What if your record is for something more minor? Well, then your odds may be a bit better. We say this largely because they claim to have a rich culture of diverse employees, so it only seems logical to think they may have employees with a criminal record of some sort. However, this has not been confirmed as fact.
What are some entry-level jobs?
At United Rentals, the entry-level jobs are in sales, inventory and warehouse, and maintenance.
All their entry-level positions are trainable and you don’t need much experience to apply. Keep in mind that you may be asked to do shift work, or even work on weekends and holidays. Depending on the position, you’ll be on your feet or working with heavy materials, so make sure you’re up to the task of the job you’re applying for.
How to get hired at United Rentals with a felony
Look through all currently open positions at United Rentals to see which one works for you. Since they’re an equipment rental and sales company, any experience with construction work or knowledge of light or heavy duty types of equipment used by contractors will make you stand out from other applicants.
Let’s look at customizing your resume to match what they’re looking for:
- Based on the industry — do you have skills or knowledge about construction equipment used by contractors? Where and when did you gain this knowledge? Since the company isn’t on Ban the Box, it’s a good idea to explain how prison has helped you grow as a person and how it has made you better trained for the job you’re applying for. It’ll come out eventually, so it’s always best to control the conversation yourself.
- Do some leg work online for perfecting your resume — including information on correct punctuation and grammar. Go to a local job placement or similar agency and get them to help you with your resume. Be sure to let them know exactly what job you want to get, and what company it’s for.

You’ve landed an interview! Congratulations. Before you sweat bullets of anxiety, here are our interview tips for United Rentals:
- You have to go the extra mile to help open eyes as well as change perspectives about hiring those of us with criminal records, so be sure to dress properly and be presentable. Don’t appear like a stereotypical felon.
- Good hygiene is always important, so be clean and smell good!
- Don’t smoke a cigarette right before the interview, as it may be a turnoff if the interviewer is a non-smoker.
- Always smile and sound as positive and confident as possible. Talk as if you’ve already gotten the job. This mentality will go a long way!
Does United Rentals do background checks?
From reviewing their online application, as well as results from our own research and word-of-mouth from other applicants, it looks like United Rentals does do background checks on all applicants.
Most companies do perform a background check at some point during the hiring process, even if it’s only to confirm you can work legally at that company.
Security-related positions will always do one, as well as jobs where you’ll interact with children.
United Rentals does their background check before conducting an interview. They typically look for any crimes relating to profiting from construction-type jobs through illegal bidding or other types of fraud and, of course, theft.
Here’s what you need to know about background checks:
Aside from Ban the Box policy, you should know that background checks vary state-to-state. For example, here are states that don’t consider records older than seven years:
- New Hampshire*
- New York*
(* sometimes certain pay or salary bracket positions require one.)
Other states only see your guilty verdicts. If you live here, your not guilty verdicts will be held back:
- New York
On the other hand, some states want to know everything, whether you were guilty or not. These states are:
- New Jersey
- North Carolina
- North Dakota
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
- West Virginia
We took to the internet to do some research on their ratings. On glassdoor.com United Rentals is rated 3.8, which is pretty good! Teamwork is highly praised here, which is awesome when you’re starting somewhere new.
It’s great to know you’re going to be helped by your co-workers if you run into trouble.
What felony convictions might have a harder time getting hired here?
Certain felonies (or even certain kinds of lesser crimes) might hurt your chances of getting hired here. Some convictions that make things harder for you to get hired include:
- Possession of stolen property
You’re going to have access to sensitive information, money and equipment, so they care that you’re trustworthy. Be prepared to explain your record to show you are that person now.
Does United Rentals do a drug test?
While we have no first-hand information on this, our suggestion is to move forward as if they do.
