What are some entry-level jobs?

Since Weigel’s is a convenience store, there are two main entry-level positions: Customer service team member and food service team member.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

You’ve decided this is the job for you, but where do you start? First, think about what Kurt said. Is your record 10 years old? If not, it’s a good idea to wait until it is. Then you’ll want to check out their careers page. This is where you’ll decide if you want to work as a customer service team member or food service team member and then fill out the appropriate application. But before you begin doing all that, you’ll need to create a strong resume. Here are a few helpful tips:

  • Include previous work history, including the names and addresses of employers.
  • List job titles and job description. Be sure to add any duties that include working directly with the public, especially in food service, retail or gas stations.
  • Mention any talents or special skills you have related to the position you’re applying for. For example, if you have customer service skills or experience handling and preparing food, now is the time to let them know. You should also include where you developed these skills, whether in prison, at school or at a previous job.
  • Check for any spelling and punctuation errors.

If you’re still not feeling confident about your resume, we’ve created a guide designed for felons for you to use.

Now that you’ve completed your resume and successfully submitted your application, here are our interviewing tips for Weigel’s:

  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early. It’ll show you’re capable of being on time and give you a chance to fill out any paperwork.
  • Dress nice. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy — khakis and a button-up shirt will be just fine.
  • If you have facial piercings, you’ll need to take them out. Cover all visible tattoos as well. This is a company policy.
  • Smile. Weigel’s is going to want to hire someone who is pleasant and positive.
  • Ask questions at the end of the interview. This will show you’re interested in a position with the company and that you were paying attention throughout the interview.

Above all, tell the truth. You don’t want to risk a possible job offer by hiding or lying about your past.

Does Weigel's do background checks?

Weigel’s will perform a background check sometime during the hiring process.

Here’s what you need to know about background checks:

Background checks vary from state-to-state. It’s important to know the law in your state. For example, if you live in one of these states, the background check only goes back seven years:

  • California
  • Colorado*
  • Kansas*
  • Maryland*
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire*
  • New York*
  • Texas*
  • Washington*

(* sometimes certain pay or salary bracket positions require one.)

And these eight states won’t look at any cases with a not guilty verdict:

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana (limited check)
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York

Some states, however, will look at your whole record, including the not guilty verdicts. So, be aware if you live in these states:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • DC
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Indiana (extensive check)
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming
